Bike Shed - Ballyvaughn, Ireland

Burren College of Art and Design

While in Ballyvaughn, Ireland on a study abroad trip, we took on projects for the Burren College of Art and Design. The student dorms were a mile down the road and many of the students cycled to class but they had no place to store their bikes out of the wind and rain.

I, along with six other Auburn students, designed and built a new bike shed in 7 days. We had to design the shelter to be built quickly but be very sturdy so that it could endure the rain and strong winds of Ballyvaughn.

Day 1-2

The first two days were spent researching, planning, sketching and modeling in Sketchup. We decided the dimensions and the materials that were required for our design and prepared to make it reality.

Day 3-5

Days 3 through 5 were spent building the frame and applying the shiplap walls (indoors because it was really cold and very windy). We designed the frame so that it could be disassembled and taken to the dorms for reassembly.

Day 6-7

The final two days were spent reassembling the bike shed on site. This included setting up and nailing down the walls, installing the bike racks and attaching the metal roof with bolts.
